Sound: Non-diegetic

Non-diegetic sound is all the sound that is added in during the editing process and that we cannot see where it comes from, opposed to the sound that is recorded within the frame. Non-diegetic sound can take the form of music, sound effects or a voice over added in. Music is again, usually considered a very effective component of communication within a short film, as it essentially tells the audience how to feel; for example, if the music is very upbeat and joyful, the audience know to feel happiness, whereas if the music is very dark, dull and slow, they know to feel more sad and depressed.
